AIRTEL UGANDA CONTRIBUTES TO THE RE-DEVELOPMENT OF THE UGANDA MARTYRS SHRINE.

His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni launched a fundraising drive for the re-development of the Uganda Martyrs Shrine in Namugongo. The shrine is a center of convergence for thousands of devout Christians from across the world that makes the annual pilgrimage to celebrate the lives of the martyrs.

During the event, Airtel Uganda committed to the noble cause through the use of its Airtel Money platform where its millions of subscribers can take the opportunity to easily and conveniently contribute to shrines refurbishment.

MTN Uganda the leading Mobile Money network has partnered with Centenary Bank Uganda to advance their ATM Cash out footprint by allowing customers to cash out at all Centenary bank  ATMs across the country.

“At MTN we listen to our customers’ needs and wants and with this background we continuously strive to exploit opportunities that make the life of our customers smooth and simplified, and our partnership with Centenary back is absolutely another opportunity to reach out to customers all over the country with this new proposition” said MTN’s acting Chief Marketing Officer Kenneth Kiddu.

Centenary bank’s 147 ATMs that are strategically located at all the 62 branches in the country will be utilized by millions of customers from   centenary bank and MTN Mobile Money.

“We are constantly looking for opportunities to simplify banking; and continuously employing the latest and best technology available to make banking more convenient. In MTN Mobile Money, we have found a strong, reputable and reliable partner we can work with to deliver our promise to our customers and improve their experience’’, commented FabianKasi the Managing Director Centenary Bank.

According to the central bank, Mobile Money transactions totalled UGX11.7 trillion in 2012, which was a 211% increase since 2011. MTN continues to lead Mobile Money in Uganda with over 6.2 million registered users since their launch in 2009.

“MTN is proud of the Mobile Money product because it has ably contributed to the country’s financial sector by improving on customers’ micro savings culture, money transfer activities, withdrawals and bill payments to mention but a few.

We are partnering with banks like Centenary bank so that our customers can seamlessly withdraw cash off their Mobile Money accounts using ATMs. The service is available to all MTN as well as Centenary bank customers who are registered on Mobile Money” Mr Kiddu added.

He welcomed the partnership with Centenary Bank, saying that it was yet another milestone to the success of MTN Mobile Money in Uganda.

Centenary Bank has been very successful in bringing a large number of rural non-banking populations into the banking conventional, rendering basic banking within their reach through expanded delivery channels, boosting their confidence, attracting them with a wide variety of affordable services and setting higher standards for customer service.
MTN and Centenary Bank are very assured that with the launch of the Mobile Money ATM cash out service, another new 24/7 service will be available to the millions of masses who are registered customers      of     MTN  Mobile         Money.

MTN Mobile Money has enjoyed unprecedented success since it was launched 5 years ago, now registering in excess of 30 million transactions each month. As per the GSMA 2012 Global Mobile Money adoption survey, MTN Uganda ranks 2nd in terms of number of active Mobile Money customer accounts in the world.

To access the ATM cash out service, a customer performs an easy two part process. On the phone, the customer dial *165#, Selects Financial services, ATM Cash out, then ATM withdrawals. The customer then selects 1 to generate a TIN code (4 digit number), and then enters their mobile money pin. A TIN code will then be issued to the customer to use    the   ATM.

The customer then turns to the ATM machine, selects Mobile Money, and then MTN Mobile Money, enters their phone number, the amount they wish to withdraw, and their TIN code. The ATM then dispenses their cash and a transaction receipt. It’s that simple.

Zimbabwe Top Pros Win ahead of Uganda Open

Zimbabwe’s TongoonaCharamba, was at the weekend, the winner of the annual SiphiweNyanda Golf Tournament held at Swazi Royal Golf Course that concluded after 54 holes on 23rd August 2014 in Ezulwini.

Charamba, who is fondly known as ‘TC’, carded a score of 70 in the third and final round to come out on top on eight-under-par 208, pocketing E27 000 at the Royal Swazi Spa Golf Course at Ezulwini yesterday.

The celebrated event played in honour of South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC) stalwart, SiphiweNyanda, featured a field of 75 professional golfers from Southern African countries that included Zimbabwe, South Africa, Swaziland and Zambia.

“It’s my first time to compete in the event but I think the experience of playing in the same course in previous Sunshine Tour tournaments has come in handy,”  the champion said. “I did not play well in the first and last round but managed to win. I still feel I should have done better. I now turn my efforts to the upcoming Uganda Open in East Africa.”

FarahiChitengwa, another of the Uganda Open registered players carded 67 73 70 six-under to finish second, two shots behind TC. Both players arrive in the country on 1st September 2014.

For the first time, the field will comprise over 100 foreign entrants, most of which are in the pro-am and the professionals category. The Ugandan golfers have also shown significant interest in the tournament by registering in large numbers. All golf clubs in Uganda are well represented and all so are all East African Golf Federation countries i.e. Ethiopia, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

 

The professional notables in the field who have submitted entries include Sunshine Tour Players (Alan Michell, Tebogho Sefatsa, Tongoona Charamba, Farahi Chitengwa and Ignatius Mketekete), and a full field of the Kenyan contingent that includes Richard Ainley, Dismas Indiza, Simon Ngige, David Odhiambo and Nicklaus Rokoine. Pro Haile from Ethiopia will participate in the Uganda Open for the first time, while John Kisia will represent Burundi alone. Rwanda will be represented by Erneste Ndayisenga and Emmanuel Ruterana but Baptiste Hakizimana will miss this open away on a tour in the United States. Tanzanians Brayson Nyeza and Rajabu Pembe will look forward to a share of the prize kitty too, appearing in Uganda for the first time. All Ugandan professionals

have fully registered for the Open save for Sadi Atibu who will not participate so as to support the tournament technical desk.

In the amateur main event, this Open will be graced by 3 previous winners in Rogers Byaruhanga, Phillip Kasozi and Peter Sendawula, in a mounth watering clash of the top amateurs. The field is further comprised of all national team players who are currently in camp for the East Africa Golf Challenge that tees off next week. Seasoned players like Gideon Kagenzi, Francis Ngabo and Stephen Katwiremu have all registered for the event. Willy Kitata who has been out of the country has registered well in time ahead of the tournament, vowing to start where he left off in the 2012

Open. The Rwanda national team will all be staying for the Open following registration of all the national team players by Davis Kashaka, on their behalf under the Rwanda Golf Union. Karanja Karubui Junior alongside Herman “Deco” Mutebi will be the youngest players to play in this Open, alongside other junior national team players like Andrew Byaruhanga and Ronald Otile.

The subsidiary category has attracted a full field of golfers that includes senior golfers like Sam Byagagaire, Ivan Koreta and Francis Kazinduki and upcoming golfers like Mukasa Elly, Moses Sebugwawo and Duncan Karugaba to mention but a few.

The Union will now verify the entries, check the handicaps (subsidiary category) and complete the entry approval process. Accreditation will commence on Tuesday 25th  August 2014 at the Uganda Golf Club and will involve issue of tournament kits for all players and draw lists. All players are encouraged to collect their accreditation materials early so as to avoid being inconvenienced by late accreditation. The tournament draws for all events will be advertised in the press after finalization by the Union ahead of the tournament.

Huawei Uganda partners with Orange to award young APP developers

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, partnered with Orange Uganda of it Community Innovations Awards 2014 to award young android application developers at a colorful awards dinner held at Kampala Serena Hotel.

The awards organized by Orange since 2011 attract university level students to develop mobile apps that are relevant to community issues in the areas of health, education and agriculture.

Huawei donated approximately 65 pieces of Ascend Y330 Smartphones to the participants as platform for the innovative apps. ‘Developing local ICT talents though knowledge transfer initiatives are core in our CSR strategy for Uganda, Africa and globally.

Businessman Mbire appointed Board Chairman Makerere University Holdings Company

Makerere University has today inaugurated a new Board of Directors for the newly registered University Holding Company to be chaired by Kampala renowned Businessman , Entrepreneur, Industrialist and MTN Uganda Chairman; Charles Mbire.  The event took place at Makerere University Administration offices Friday morning.

The Vice Chancellor Makerere University said; “Makerere University Holding Company will create the path way towards the University’s financial sustainability by acting as an entrepreneur in the development of University Business units that include bakery, University printer, maize mill and Guest house among others.”

Charles Mbire stands out as a distinguished Business personality for which he has won several accolades. He studied Business and economics and graduated with honors from Essex University in England. He went on to obtain a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Leicester University, also in the United Kingdom.

Other Board Members include prominent figures from the private and financial services as well as legal fraternity.

MTN Uganda makes internet accessibility easier with Mobile Money.

Today MTN Uganda launches another milestone service in the Mobile Money industry by enabling customers to directlybuy internet bundles off their Mobile Money account.

MTN has continuously developed services that simplify the lives of Mobile Money customers like the recently redesigned Mobile Money Menu,the additional utility services and now enabling their over 3 million data customers to buy internet bundles using MTN Mobile Money and the 6.2M Mobile Money customers can buy data at a click.

The service can be accessed by dialing *165#, selecting MTN Services, then Buy Internet Bundles and then following the prompts to buy an Internet bundleof their choice for their own number or for another person’s number. Customers will receive an SMS notification to confirm the status of the transaction.

MTN Uganda has dominated the Mobile Money industry because of the increased investment in the distribution network that guarantees cash availability at Agent locations, and this is further enhanced by the stability of the network that connects all the points in the transaction. “At MTN Uganda, we are fully committed to the delivery of quality service and this new enhancement on Mobile Money doesn’t miss thistarget.We are aware of our customer’s desires and challenges such asrunning out ofdatawhen they do not have airtime and hence we have created this service whichis designed to enable them top up their bundles using mobile money so that they can keep in touch with their loved ones, stay abreast with office emails, and do all other activities on internet” said the acting MTN Chief Marketing Officer Kenneth Kiddu.
