MTN Uganda announced revised Mobile Money rates effective July 2nd, 2013. Commenting on this increment, the MTN Uganda’s GM Corporate Services, Anthony Katamba said, “According to the new national budget 2013/2014, the 10% levy on Mobile Money is to be applied on transaction fees paid on all money transfer services and as such the fee is paid by users. It should be noted that the new 10% levy is to be applied on all money transfer services offered in Uganda, including those offered by non-telecom operators”.

MTN Mobile Money touches the lives of many Ugandans on a daily basis and therefore there is the need to continuously invest in infrastructure to ensure improved service standards and reliability.

MTN Uganda’s Mobile Money active customer base has recorded significant growth by more than 50% during the last 12 months. The new Mobile Money rates will have slight increase on transaction fees, as example the convenience of sending UGX 4 million to another Mobile Money registered subscriber will cost UGX 2,200.

As Uganda’s leading tax payer MTN Uganda has an obligation to support the National development agenda by assisting in tax collection as prescribed by law.

“Although we feel the tax has been applied at a very early development stage of the Mobile Money product, MTN is committed to continued investment and growth of the service in Uganda,” Katamba added.

The national budget aims to widen the tax base, and one of the ways in which Government reaches new tax payers is via consumption taxes on various goods and services.

“We evaluated the impact of this new tax with all stakeholders and we saw the need to adjust our rates slightly in order for us to support this tax increment,” he concluded.

MTN Uganda records more than 85% growth in Data Customers

0

——-

– MTN Internet Expo moved to Gulu (Northern Uganda)

MTN Uganda customers using the Internet have increased by more than 85% in the last 12 months leading up to June 2013 , said Ernst Fonternel, MTN Uganda Chief Marketing Officer.

He attributed their phenomenal growth in Internet customers with more than 1.6 million added to their expanding data footprint with superior speeds, unmatched airtime availability, affordable Internet dongles and bundles as well as their World-class Internet technologies supporting up to 100Mbps with 4G LTE.

“Since the beginning of the year, MTN has been the first in the market to introduce WiFi Hotspots, 42Mbps and 4G LTE. We also provide our customers with 15MB worth of Free Internet every month and we are constantly reaching out to our customers through various activations and great device deals,” Fonternel said.

“Many people are starting to use second screens, in addition to television, and therefore content previously limited to televisions now has to be delivered via Laptops, Notebooks, Tablets and Mobiles. This requires high speed technologies like 3G+ and 4G LTE where MTN continues to lead the investment into infrastructure.” Fonternel explained.

MTN is significantly investing into Internet education and as part of this initiative is hosting MTN Expos across the country. The regional MTN Expos, with Gulu opening on 27th June 2013, brings services closer to its customers so that they can experience the power of the Internet and various technologies first hand. Aligned with the Government’s intentions to increase Internet penetration in Uganda, the regional MTN Expos create awareness for the vast opportunities available through the use of ICT as well as expose customers to the various affordable data plans and devices available from MTN including Feature Phones, Smart Phones, Tablets, Notebooks, Laptops, Internet Dongles and Routers.

MTN Uganda is the leading investor in technology with a planned investment of over $70million in 2013 to upgrade infrastructure and expand coverage to rural areas in addition to their $80million during 2012.

MTN is well known for its unmatched Internet coverage, speeds and innovation and during 2012 alone launched its own WiFi service called MTN Hot Spots, doubled their Internet speeds to become the first Uganda operator to launch 42Mbps and 4G LTE on its network.

“All these investments shows MTN’s commitment to continue providing services relevant to their current and future needs, and firmly positions MTN as a leader with a clear vision for the future; leading the way for others to follow.”

“Over the next five years, aligned with MTN’s vision, we will be leading the delivery of a bold, new Digital World which naturally means more connected customers to make their lives a whole lot brighter.” Fonternel concluded.

DStv captures highlights of the AU 50th anniversary

0

——-

On the 25th May in the capital of Ethiopia Addis Ababa, the AU declared that Africa’s 50 year past is history as it kicked off year-long celebrations commemorating the formation of the OAU/AU 50 years ago. The 2013 celebrations took place at a time when six of the fastest growing economies are in Africa and on the back of one of the worst economic crises for the West.
All eyes were on Africa as the rest of the world, Heads of States and dignitaries wished Africa well on its achievements in the last 50 years. As a partner of the OAU/AU 50th anniversary celebrations, MultiChoice Africa gave Africans for the first time in the history of the AU, an opportunity to see the organization in action and for Africans in the diaspora to be a part of its deliberations, bringing the AU to the level of the people and allowing Africans to own and take accountability for their contribution to the continent’s successes.

This weekend, DStv will be giving Africans an opportunity to relive those moments – in the comfort of their homes. Tune in to Africa Magic World on channel 155 on Saturday, 29 June at 16:00 CAT as Africa rewrites its own history. A history that will forge an African Renaissance shaped by Pan Africanism, embraced by the years ahead as the AU designs its agenda towards 2063.

The birth of the AU – 11 years ago – revisited at the 50th Anniversary celebrations, puts a new mantle on the shoulders of its leaders.

A repeat broadcast is scheduled for Sunday, 30 June at 09:00 and 15:00 CAT.

RVR completes 73 km Mombasa Nairobi railway line replacement project

——–

  • Improved line has cut Mombasa-Nairobi transit times by 6 hours
NAIROBI, June, 2013 – Rift Valley Railways (RVR), the operator of the Kenya-Uganda railway, has completed the replacement of 73 kilometres of railway track between Mombasa and Nairobi at an investment cost of over 51 billion Ushs ($20 million). The development is projected to improve reliability and speed up the delivery of cargo by rail from Mombasa.

Completion of this railway modernization project has reduced cargo delivery time between Mombasa and Nairobi by six hours through rebuilding the most badly rundown sections that were responsible for 60 per cent of blockage time on the railway line.

“RVR’s over Ushs 51 billion investment in building this new stretch of railroad is a significant milestone as this railway line had been ailing for lack of investment for over a decade prior to the concession,” said RVR executive vice chairman Brown Ondego.

Construction of the new railway line included the laying of 10,000 sleepers to retain track geometry and improve safety. The upgrade is part of a larger railway track modernization programme that will see the rebuilding of over 360 kms of the most affected sections of the railroad in Kenya and Uganda.

“The completion of this project under our continuing track upgrading programme has considerably improved the reliability and efficiency of our operations. We are now operating larger-capacity trains and, as a result, have improved our loading capacity and reduced travel hours,” Ondego added.

The 10 month reconstruction project awarded contracts worth over Ushs 13 billion to Kenyan contractors and suppliers and paid over Ushs 873 million in wages to workers recruited from SMEs under a partnership programme with communities living along the railway line.
Commenting on the faster cargo delivery, Steve Felder, managing director of Maersk shipping agency, noted, “As a shipping line we very much welcome this development as we are convinced that it will effectively improve the safe and reliable transport of our customer’s cargo and create more demand for rail transport between Mombasa and Nairobi”.

Ondego said RVR is on course with significant investments to introduce innovations in operations and modernize infrastructure both in Kenya and Uganda in order to ensure a dependable and well-functioning railway that can spur growth and regional economic integration throughout East Africa.

He said improved reliability has been one of the immediate benefits and the number of incidents declined a full 20 per cent last month.

British Airways to test hi-tech bag tag to cut waits

0

——–

Next month British Airways is to trial a new electronic bag tag that could do away with the need to have a new paper tag every time you fly.

Once checked in, customers just need to hold their smartphone over the electronic tag, which automatically updates with a unique barcode containing their flight details and an easy-to-see view of their bag’s destination.

Not requiring a traditional paper tag to be printed and attached, customers can then save precious time by having their electronic tag quickly scanned at the bag drop, going straight through security to relax before catching their flight.

It is intended that the patent-pending hi-tech tag can be used time and time again.

Frank van der Post, British Airways ‘managing director, brands and customer experience, said: “This is a fantastically simple, yet smart device that gives each customer the choice to have their own personalised electronic baggage tag that changes with the swipe of a smartphone – every time they fly.

“As the saying goes, ‘good things come in small packages’, and this innovative device is no exception. Along with other initiatives we are investing in, we believe it has the potential to revolutionise the way our customers check in and pass through every airport around the world in the future.”

Glenn Morgan, British Airways’ head of service transformation, said: “Our customers are at the heart of everything we do and our drive to innovate with this new electronic bag tag is a brilliant example of how we can help transform their travelling experience.

“We’ve harnessed expertise from across the airline to produce a solution for speedier checking-in, which at one swipe shows British Airways can be a game changer when it comes to customer service.”

Development of the personalised electronic bag tag is part of a wider strategy by British Airways to improve dramatically the customer experience through the airport, making it quicker, smoother and easier.

Major trials have also taken place on self-service bag drops, automated boarding gates, porter services, auto check-in, and meet and greet hosts.

The electronic tags have been specially developed by British Airways in partnership Densitron Displays, and Design works Windsor, while Heathrow Airport is providing help with the trials.

Over the next five years British Airways is investing more than £5bn in new aircraft, smarter cabins, elegant lounges, and new technologies to make life more comfortable in the air and on the ground.
