Bell Lager breathes new life into Fun Factory’s Comedicine

0

Bell Lager has announced sponsorship of Fun Factory’s weekly Thursday night comedy show now named “Comedicine”. Speaking at the joint announcement, Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) National Promotions Manager, Roy Ronald Tumwizere said the brewery had also worked with Fun Factory to make the weekly show fresh and more exciting for comedy lovers.

The show will now feature a 30 minute live acoustic music experience in the theatre foyer before people go into the auditorium to laugh their ribs off. This musical experience will feature fresh talents such as Jackie Akello, Kenneth Mugabi, Herbert Sensamba and Happy Kisakye.

“We believe audience perceptions change over time because of exposure. We now are dealing with a demanding breed of mobile fun-loving ‘Kampalans’ on a weekly basis and so, we have resolved to re-invent the Thursday nights into a more interactive experience with wider variety. We are undertaking this game changing phase with Bell Lager as our main sponsors,” said Richard Tuwangye.

At this launch, UBL continued with the ongoing Tubbaale promotion and a number of lucky winners walked away with prizes courtesy of Bell Lager. The spin wheel session saw people win goodies such as power banks, headphones, flash disks and beer. The grand prize, a 32 inch Samsung flat screen TV, was given away by the comedians at the end of the night through a raffle courtesy of Bell Lager.

“This year UBL celebrates its 70 year anniversary which is a huge milestone for us. We are celebrating this achievement with our customers which is the reason behind the Tubbaale beer celebration with Uganda’s oldest beer, Bell Lager. Fun Factory has cracked our ribs for 8 years and as an authentic Ugandan brand, we are pleased to be partnering with an activity such as this one that celebrates and recognizes authentic Ugandan talent and the unique arts and great local talent Uganda has to offer,” said Tumwizere.

In addition to the music experience, Fun Factory has also added a segment called “Finding the Funny” hosted by comedians Richard Tuwangye and Anne Kansiime during which fresh comedy talent will be show cased.

Kampala Arts Trust and RVR launch Kampala Art Biennale at the Kampala Railway Station

• Exhibitions will take place at seven different institutions in Kampala inclusive of the Kampala Railways Station, Uganda Museum, Makerere Art Gallery, Nommo Gallery, Afriart Gallery and the National Theatre
• Exhibition to be held from September 3rd to October 2nd 2016.

RVR in partnership with Uganda Art Trust launched the Kampala Art Biennale (KAB16) at the Kampala Railways Station.

This would be the second edition of the Kampala Art Biennale organized by Kampala Arts Trust, a private initiative under the theme “Seven Hills”, conceived by Elise Atangana with the aim of promoting art, major institutions with in Kampala and the city as a whole. “Seven Hills” refers to Kampala’s historical city when the Kingdom of Buganda was built on seven hills, in this context an organic project that focuses on concepts of Mobility Studies which includes the movement of people, objects, services or digital/virtual travel and how it affects us in our day lives.

Speaking at the launch event while welcoming guests to the Kampala central station, one of the venues where the seven exhibitions are being housed, The General Manager RVR Uganda Joram Nyanzi said “We appreciate Art as a reflection of what goes on in society. Art as you know has the unique power to influence positive change, especially art of today, produced by our own artists in Uganda and as a company that is evolving, we immediately understood what Kampala Arts Trust was trying to achieve when we were approached. Their work is very commendable, a product we are proud to associate ourselves with.

Indeed when you go to the Kampala Railway Station, a lot on mobility studies around Kampala is depicted through the temporary art on display by Thomas Aquilina and Alex Lyons who focus on video, sound and architecture. Artiste Gosette Diakota Lubondo explores mobility with in an old train through her photography, emphasizing the fact that mobility is first individually experienced.

The most fragile piece of art work on display was a live presentation by Immaculate Mali a Ugandan who debuted her exhibition with a performance titled ‘Safe here’. The performance focuses on her experiences growing up as a disabled child and how the situation robbed her of a childhood. Immaculate uses sound collected from children’s playgrounds, a bicycle, and a splint to allude to a stolen childhood and human resilience through creation of a fiction of imagination. The splint is one of many leg supports she wore during her time at school. It depicts not only support but a symbol of pain and fragility.

The biennial features artworks by over 25 artists from Uganda, Botswana, India, Congo, France, Kenya, Germany, UK, South Africa, Sudan and Belgium. Daudi Karungi, the Director Kampala Art Biennale KAB16 explained “the biennale is established to recognize, and integrate African contemporary art that is being created on the periphery of mainstream information avenues. In 2014, when we last held our inaugural KLAArt 014 here at the Kampala Railway Station, it was evident that the people in Kampala are leading in the creative cultural renaissance seen through 7,000 visitors who attended the 6 exhibitions, showing works that had been displayed by 45 artists from 13 African countries.”

Kampala Art Biennale 2016 will add another goal of international exposure. This second edition intends to invite renowned international artists to exchange with local artists while working in Kampala. KAB16 will also bring together key speakers including leading artists, gallerists, art historians, curators, museum directors, critics, and collectors from across the world to discuss adverse range of topics.

The Kla Art Biennale is open to the public at all the seven locations including Kampala Railways Station, Uganda Museum, Makerere Art Gallery, Nommo Gallery, Afriart Gallery and the National Theatre from Monday to Saturday between 8:00 am and 6:30 pm. Entrance is free.

Just like the biblical Garden of Eden, stuffed with choices, the same was Eden International, the Miss Teen Judges had a rough time selecting the best in almost all categories.

Adye Faith was voted Miss Ambitious and Irimbere Vera Claudia was voted Miss Fashionista.

Crown Beverages Limited, a leading soft drinks bottler in Uganda, has reduced its retail price for the 330ml pack size by Shs200 from Shs 1,200 to Shs1, 000, in an effort to make their products more affordable for their customers.

According to Jeff Sekandi, CBL’s Head of Marketing, this move is intended to ensure CBL customers continue enjoying the company’s quality brands including; Mirinda, Mountain Dew, Pepsi Cola, amidst increasing standards of living.

The cost of living is high and yet the expenditure is constant if not increasing. So, in putting those considerations together we have decided to cut down on the soda prices to help our clients enjoy our products,” said Sekandi.

“We did the same in May for the 500ml, we cut the prices from shs1700 to shs1500. We have decided to do it for the 330ml as well. It is also worth noting that these price cuts are for a promotional period only.” Sekandi added.

Mr Sekandi, however, noted that the price cuts will not be applicable to any other pack size and returnable glass bottles.

330ml packs in Mountain Dew, Mirinda and Pepsi are available in all shops, supermarkets and dukas countrywide.

MTN Uganda’s MoKash expected to revolutionize Small Loans Market

By Nicholas Kalungi.

MTN Uganda customers are now able to operate mobile-powered savings accounts, earn reasonable interest on deposits and also access/borrow short term loans through the Mobile Money product portfolio.

This comes after MTN Uganda and Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA) launched a convenient and innovative mobile financial service named MoKash -#MTNMoKash and #MoKash.

The Product allows MTN Mobile Money subscribers to save between UGX 1 shillings to UGX 1.6 million, earn interests ranging from 2% to 5% on their savings and also get short terms loans of up to UGX. 1 million repayable within a month.

The launch of MoKash is a development that not only further reaffirms MTN’s market leadership status in the telecommunication industry but also increases pressure or possibly competition on other financial institutions offering Savings and Loans products particularly Banks, Saccos , Micro Finance Institutions and Loan Sharks.

“If by venturing into #MobileMoney, Telecos evidently injured other Financial Providers, then #MTNMokash is an insult to the injured,” @ronysad suggested via Twitter.

According to information on the MTN Website, “MoKash provides customers the ability to save and borrow using their phones. Customers can save while earning an interest or take out short term loans at a reasonable fee. The customer does not have to visit any bank to fill out forms. To activate, a customer should dial *165*5# and enter their MTN Mobile Money PIN.”

Uganda’s number one Innovator;

The product pragmatically positions MTN as Uganda’s Innovation leader. Talking Mobile Financial Services (MFS) only; in 2009, they (MTN) were the first mobile operator to launch Mobile Money in Uganda and others followed suit. Today, they are the first telecom to offer a Mobile Phone Loans and Savings Product in Uganda and trust me, their competitors are going to play a catch up game of rolling out related products soon. For that, you and I must always ‘put some respect’ on the MTN brand.

Nonetheless, as we applaud MTN Uganda for another ‘First of the First’ first-class product unveiling, we equally ought to task, somewhat challenge it to rise the Ugandan flag and profile higher through becoming East Africa or perhaps Africa’s leading innovator.

For now and particularly in the MFS sector, MTN is always playing second fiddle to Safaricom. In 2007, Safaricom, a telecom partly owned by Vodafone was the first to launch M-Pesa (Mobile Money) in the World starting in Kenya.  Two years later, MTN launched Mobile Money in Uganda. Again in November 2012, Safaricom and CBA launched M-Swari (Mobile Money Savings and Loans) in Kenya. Almost four years later, MTN Uganda has partnered with CBA Bank to roll out a similar product in Uganda.

Deepening Financial Inclusion;

Mokash and other soon to be launched Mobile-Based Savings and Loans products (unconfirmed information indicates that Airtel’s Savings and Loans product is almost ready) will foster Financial Inclusion across Uganda through bridging the banked vs. unbanked gap.

As of December 2015, Uganda had about 5 million Bank Accounts shared by at least 25 Banks, compared to the about 20 million mobile phone users, more than half of which were active mobile money users subscribing to either of MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money, M-Sente and Africell Money. This number only grows.

Considering that a product like Mokash is used through a simple USSD code (*165*5#) accessible on all phones, many in need of small loans will opt for it. Meanwhile, the appetite for similar loans from Banks, Micro Financers, Saccos and Loan Sharks will automatically shrink thanks to their inclusion of multiple paperwork, delayed processing, requirement of much security and high repayment interests!

If you doubt this, M-Shwari’s success story should calm you down.

As of December 2015, M-Shwari had over 12 million customers, total deposits of KES 7.6 billion (UGX 252.9 billion) and KES 64.5 billion (UGX 21.4 trillion) as total loan amount disbursed just 3 years after its launch.

Further, while addressing the #Pakasa8 Forum on 6th August, Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore noted that their M-Shwari product processes a customer loan every “second of the day” through CBA bank. Surely, M-Shwari gets bigger each passing day.

I am not a braggadocio but truth is; with the exception of ‘Technical Teams, Business Users, Piloting Staff and Selected Customers’ that tested the product before it was rolled on to the market, I have been among the very first MTN MoKash customers. With your permission, allow me to authoritatively note that my first time experience, though limited has been exciting and worthwhile.

Now that #MTNMoKash has been launched, missing lunch or a date is by choice. You have no Cash, MTN will bail you out with a small loan. But guys, remember to PAY!
