“South Africa is the only market in the world to host BBC Worldwide’s full suite of channels and over the past six months we have seen record viewing figures and an impressive 17 percent uplift in share, proving that we are the ones to watch.”

Set in London’s East End, multi award-winning EastEnders will premiere on BBC Brit from Monday 19 June at 18.30 CAT, when viewers can look forward to the return of familiar face Robbie Jackson (Dean Gaffney) and introduction of new characters including bad lad ‘Woody’ Woodward (Lee Ryan), business woman Fi Browning (Lisa Faulkner) and brand new family The Taylors, who are set to cause big trouble on The Square.

DStv Uganda, the leading pay-television entertainment company has entered into a partnership understanding with the Uganda Swimming Federation (USF) which will last from June 2017 – June 2018.
The sponsorship entails the following 3 (three) major USF National Championships on the Federation’s calendar:
1) The National Inter-club Swimming Championships, 10 – 11 June 2017 at KISU;
2) The National Independence Swimming Gala, 7 – 8 October 2017 at KISU; and
3) The National Open Swimming Championships, 11 – 12 November 2017 at GEMS Cambridge International School Kampala.
The total worth of DStv’s contribution for the 3 National Events UGX 100 Million, and DStv for which DStv has been named title sponsor for Events.

This Partnership will mutually benefit DStv and USF. For DStv, it is expected that more customers will be reached through the marketing of the DStv EXPLORA Decoder. For USF, funding will be eased for the selected Events with increased publicity for selected Brand Ambassadors, who are all young swimmers.

Making remarks about this partnership, Ms. Phoebe Nakabazzi, DStv Marketing Manager said “DStv through the SuperSport brand continuously contributes to the sports sector directly and indirectly. With sports as a key focus of our corporate social investment programme, we aim at showcasing Uganda’s local talent through the different sports programs. Our decision to sponsor swimming is in alignment with our desire to support local content, local sport included. We believe it’s a sport that needs recognition in Uganda and by tapping into it; we will make a fundamental difference in swimming as a serious sport.”

“Our sponsorship will cover some of the expenses such as medals, trophies, official uniforms and podium winners’ gifts. DStv will also support USF in creating awareness for swimming as a sport and at the same time identify talented swimmers who will double as DStv kid ambassadors.” Phoebe continued.

Dr. Donald Rukare, President of the Uganda Swimming Federation, received the sponsorship package on behalf of USF and thanked DStv Uganda for the support. He said,
“We are excited about this partnership with DStv as this is a big boost for Uganda Swimming Federation and the different participants set to compete in the coming tournaments. The fact that the partnership is aimed towards maturing Ugandan sports, particularly within the younger generation is a step in the right direction and in line with the federation’s goal to overhaul swimming, including other water sports. Swimming as a sport is still growing in Uganda, and therefore an honour when companies like DStv support its growth.”

Dr. Rukare concluded by noting that Uganda is skilled in swimming but a lot of improvement is still desired. “It’s through such corporate partnerships that the road to triumph is built. We therefore thank DStv Uganda for leading our way to victory” he said.

DStv customers will also be able to access Explora’s with free installation at the USF events only. Customers will also win themselves branded items on reactivating their subscription at all USF/DStv engagements.

Reasons to Invest In Real Estate

0

Real Estate involves different aspects like Land, Houses, Apartments and Commercial buildings. It is a vast term but most people use it to refer to properties (residential and commercial). You can make money from real estate business includes buying, renting and selling these different properties but if you’re looking for an investment opportunity it is better to know exactly which aspect of real estate you want to invest in. There are many reasons as to why investment in Real Estate is a great opportunity and below are 9 of them:

Banks are lending: Most people hesitate investing in real estate because they don’t have enough money but today in Uganda and Africa at large, banking institutions offer home loans to people who can not afford the properties. The rates are now affordable and you can now use our online mortgage calculator for all your mortgage solutions.

Reasonable prices: It is now possible to invest in real estate at reasonable prices. If you have a small budget you can invest in plots of land that do not cost a lot, however if you have abit of cash and looking for a quick investment look for bank foreclosures because their prices are slightly lower than normal prices.

Technology: Technology has made real estate investment very easy. When you buy a house, it is not hard anymore to move around looking for clients, these days you can list it online and get clients to call you and schedule visits. The internet provides a platform to list properties and make them visible to many people.

Knowledge is Free: Investing in real estate is different from other investments. When you invest in other fields like tech companies you have to learn about statistics and finance but in real estate all the knowledge you need is provided online like market size, pricing of different properties according to different areas and you can also hire agents/property managers that can assist you. .

Cash Flow: Investing in real estate has a positive cash flow. Let’s say you buy a house at 80,000,000 Shillings and rent it at $1500 per month, you will make an investment return in 5 years and after 5 years the rest will be profit which you can reinvest in another business, save for future financial challenges or use to settle debts.

The Loan Pay Down: When you invest in real estate through a bank loan, your tenant is actually the one paying your mortgage not you and after 30 years your house might be your main source of income, feeding you and paying for your kids’ education.

Appreciation: The value of most real estate aspects i.e land always goes up instead of going down. Properties don’t lose value instead they increase value from time to time.

Fresh Dairy Launches 1-Yoghurt-A-Day Campaign

0

Fresh Dairy in collaboration with Uganda National Association of Paediatric and Child Health Nurses (UNAPCHN) have today launched a campaign dubbed ‘1-Yoghurt-a-Day’ with an aim of encouraging more children and adults in Uganda to consume Yoghurt as an important step towards meeting their daily milk content requirement. The campaign will also seek to encourage children and adults to consume yoghurt as a healthy and nutritious snack.

Jolly Rubambarama, a senior nurse and Chairperson UNAPCHN noted that the health and nutrition benefits of consuming 1-Yoghurt-a-Day include:
• CALCIUM: Yoghurt contains calcium which is the main mineral in our bodies. Calcium is beneficial for increasing bone mass in children as well as preventing fractures in adults. This is particularly important for postmenopausal women, who have decreased bone turnover as a consequence of hormonal changes accompanying menopause.
• Calcium also increases the body’s breakdown of fat and helps preserve one’s metabolism, which in turn helps with weight management. A well-managed weight in turn reduces the risk of Type 2 Diabetes.
• PROTEIN: Yogurt contains protein which contributes to both the maintenance and growth of muscle mass and normal bones. Proteins cannot be stored in the body which means they need to be part of our daily diets;
• VITAMIN D: Yoghurt also contains Vitamin D which helps reduce the risk of osteoporosis, which is a medical condition in which the bones become brittle and fragile from loss of bone tissue;
• VITAMIN B2 and B12: Yoghurt contains Vitamin B2 and B12 which both contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism, while B2 vitamin also helps maintain normal vision;
• POTASSIUM: Yoghurt contains Potassium which helps reduce the blood-pressure;
• Yoghurt can also protect against gastrointestinal infections by suppressing the growth of pathogens that cause intestinal disturbances such as diarrhoea which often comes as a result of infection or over-use of antibiotics.

While launching the 1-Yoghurt-a-Day campaign, Caroline Muchobia, the Health and Nutrition Manager – Fresh Dairy said, ‘One of our key priority areas is Health and Nutrition. We realize that Yoghurt being one of the products we produce is a signature of a healthy diet and lifestyle not only for children but adults. Together with UNAPCHN whose expertise is Pediatrics and Child health, we are driving awareness and disseminating information on the benefits of yoghurt and its contribution towards a healthy lifestyle. It is important to expose children to healthy foods ( such as yoghurt , fruit and vegetables ) so that they learn to like them when they are still young and hence build a healthy generation by encouraging better dietary habits later in life.

Muchobia noted that Fresh Dairy is passionate about open and collaborative partnerships such as UNAPCHN through whom the following will be achieved:
• Promoting healthy nutrition through educational programs and services for both parents and healthcare professionals.
• Establishing common goals to measure improvement in dietary habits and improvement of short and long term health.
• Investing in scientific research in the field of nutrition, and working with healthcare professionals to develop innovative solutions to help improve the health of current and future generations.
Muchobia explained that studies have shown that Yoghurt is a nutrient dense food that promotes good metabolic and overall health for both children and adults.
• The Harvard School of Public Health examined data from more than 100,000 subjects in three separate long-term studies and found participants who ate one serving of yoghurt per day had an 18 percent lower risk of type 2 diabetes.
• A study conducted by researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine reveals that women who have 5 or more servings of yoghurt a week (5 cups) reduce their risk of high blood pressure by as much as 20%.

Fresh Dairy currently produces six flavors of Yoghurt namely: Strawberry, Vanilla, Chocolate, Mango, Plain and Butter Scotch which can be found countrywide.

Madhvani Foundation is giving scholarship worth 700 million for Uganda University students

0

It is undeniably true that the strength of any country lies within the education of its youth. Many underprivileged students never complete an education to the level of university. It is for this reason that the Madhvani Foundation scholarship program is offering 700million shillings. This golden opportunity to underprivileged but brilliant students this year for the 15th time.

On behalf of the five Board members, the Chairman Hon. Gerald Sendawula has launched the Madhvani Foundation scholarship fund for the academic year 2017/2018 today, he said, “the Foundation is proud to have supported over 2,000 underprivileged Ugandan students from different universities studying both scientific and technical courses. The scholarship scheme’s fund amount has grown from 300 Million shillings since 2003 to 700 Million Shillings to date.”

The Scholarship Program has witnessed incredible success stories including Martin Muganzi a 2003 beneficiary. He is currently inspiring the youth to become job creators other than job seekers. He has established a vocational enterprise for apprenticeship in Kalerwe with Tailoring, Carpentry and Agriculture skills. “ Having coming from a single parent family, school fees was a challenge but the Madhvani Foundation gave me a chance to make it in life and today I am passionate to help inspire the youth into their future” he noted.

Beatrice Apoto Madhvani Foundation administrator listed science and technical disciplines open for sponsorship as Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Actuarial Science, Architecture, Veterinary Medicine, Commerce, Hotel Management, Pharmacy, Nursing, Engineering, Food Science & Technology, Information Technology, Environment, and Medicine. She emphasized that students legible for the scholarship are undergraduate students, who have completed first year of studies at a Ugandan University; and graduate applicants who have been either admitted and/or registered for graduate programmes.

Interview With Ross Campbell, Director Public Sector – Institute Of Chartered Accountants In England And Wales

0

OUR REPORTER INTERVIEWED ROSS CAMPBELL, DIRECTOR PUBLIC SECTOR – INSTITUTE OF CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS IN ENGLAND AND WALES (ICAEW’S) DURING THE 4TH AFRICA CONGRESS OF ACCOUNTANTS TAKING PLACE FROM 2ND – 5TH MAY 2017 UNDER THE THEME ‘ACCOUNTANCY & ACCOUNTABILITY: TRANSFORMING AFRICA’S ECONOMIES’ AT SPEKE RESORT MUNYONYO AND BELOW ARE THE EXCERPTS:

1) What does public finance management generally entail?

At its highest level public finance management entails ensuring that public funds are spent in accordance with the public good, that this spending represents value for money and that the continued expenditure is sustainable within realistic projections of government revenue. This also requires good record keeping to ensure accountability to tax payers, effective risk management, and, critically, that future spending plans can be financed wisely which then promotes the creation of a stable economy.

2) What are the strong pillars that make up an effective public finance management system?

There are many pillars which support the creation and functioning of a stable and effective public finance management system. Among them are:
– A strong accounting profession with qualified individuals who hold internationally recognised professional qualifications.
– Robust international standards for accounting and audit to which professionals must adhere.
– A strong independent audit profession which promotes transparency and accountability.
– Ensuring that those holding senior management finance roles are appropriately qualified.
– Creating and implementing appropriate systems and processes to guide the profession and ensure that professionals operate with integrity and accountability.
– Publishing comprehensive information about public finances to promote trust in the profession.

3) Despite the enactment of a number of public finance management reforms since the 1990’s, Uganda continues to face many scandalous cases of misappropriation of public funds. What steps would you advise the government of Uganda to take to curb the vice of corruption altogether?

The single most important thing that any government can do to address corruption, whether in the present or the future, is to increase transparency by publishing up-to-date information which clearly and concisely presents how public funds have been used and what benefits these have resulted in for the society. This must be backed up by a strong independent audit function. In so doing, the government makes it much more difficult, if not impossible, for individuals who seek to engage in corrupt activities.

4) The public service has been riddled with corruption scandals mainly because of the weaknesses within financial management in government entities. What recommendations would you give to solve weak accountability that comes with soft controls and widespread corruption within the political and bureaucratic frameworks?

In order to bring in strong controls you need people who understand what such a system looks like and how it operates. Generally speaking, these are professionally qualified accountants or auditors who have successfully achieved very rigorous qualification, usually of an international standard. Moreover, these professionals will be held to standards of behaviour by the professional body with which they qualified, with disciplinary consequences if any unethical behaviour on their part has been proven. In fact, this is a key requirement to address accountability: there must be consistent and enforced controls which safeguard the integrity of the profession.

5) Continuous corruption in Uganda has prompted several donor agencies to suspend budget support to Uganda over the years since 2012. What advice would you give regarding attracting these donors back?

Fundamentally, these donors have to trust the system. In order to either build or regain their trust, governments who require this funding, whether in Uganda or elsewhere in the world, must bring in reforms to ensure there is strong oversight and that that system of oversight and audit is itself subject to quality checks. And the more independent that system is of government and the more it uses international standards for quality assurance and good practice, the more confidence these donors will have in it. This is the most critical way of restoring confidence and proving to these donor agencies that their support is appreciated and that their concerns are being seriously addressed.

6) The effectiveness of Uganda’s public finance management has also been affected partly by limited internet, infrastructure coverage, and a shortage of technical capacity expertise to operate the systems. What is your advice on improving Uganda’s public finance management?

Any system, in order to be effective, must be supported by a strong infrastructure which includes having professionals with the necessary skills and qualifications, systems that are resilient and capable of supporting the management and clear, transparent and auditable business processes. All three must be implemented together as they support each other. Having one without the others is not enough to ensure a robust public finance management system.

7) Citizens in Uganda continuously feel hard-pressed with taxes. How better can government of Uganda articulate the importance of paying tax to its citizens?

Again, this is a question of trust. In any society, the people must see how their taxes are being used and what benefits they are receiving. In other words, governments must justify the implementation of various forms of taxation. This is done, as mentioned earlier, through the publication of clear, concise, comprehensive, and independently audited information about public finances to promote trust in the profession and that their money will not be misappropriated. Only then will people believe in the importance of paying taxes.

8) Should the government of Uganda be accountable to its citizens for each expenditure? If so, how?

Yes, of course. Any government must if it wishes to build trust in the system of public financial management. The way to do it, again, is through the publication of clear, concise, comprehensive, and independently audited information regarding how funds have been used and the benefits to society.
