Clash of titans headlines World Cup Qualifiers on DStv’s SuperSport Channels

With the journey to Russia 2018 resuming around the globe this week, a clash of titans is the headline act in the Confederations of African Football (CAF) qualification campaign.

African football giants Nigeria and Cameroon will resume an age-old rivalry stretching back over 50 years when they face-off on Friday in the first match of a double-header fixture, with the second scheduled for Monday next week.

The Super Eagles-Indomitable Lions rivalry is one of African football’s most iconic encounters and was at the peak of continental football during the 1980s when they played out countless classics, including the 1984 Afcon final.

The upcoming double-header is definitely the most anticipated fixture of round three and four of the World Cup qualifiers as the continent has been starved of this match; the two nations having faced off just three times in the last 17 years. Both fixtures, along with a selection of other CAF qualifiers, will be broadcast live on SuperSport.

South Africa, currently sitting second in Group D behind Burkina Faso on goal difference, will be looking to keep up the pressure on the log-leaders when they travel to Cape Verde on Friday. Bafana Bafana will then be hoping to ride some momentum into the second-leg tie at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban next Tuesday.

The continent’s other World Cup hopefuls continue their quest for qualification as Ghana take on the Congo, Uganda play Egypt and Zambia go up against Algeria.

Meanwhile, the highlight of the South American fixtures sees bitter rivals Uruguay and Argentina battle it out on Friday at 12.55am, but not before Chile host Paraguay at 12.15am.

Body-slamming WWE debuts on DStv and GOtv SuperSport channels today!

The spectacular World Wrestling Entertainment will make its long-awaited return to DStv today with the first broadcast of Raw on SuperSport.

The Brooklyn WWE event was highlighted by a vicious contest between Braun Strowman, the bearded brute, and legendary Brock Lesnar that concluded in dramatic fashion. Other big names who lit up the New York night included Big Cass, John Cena and Raw tag team champions Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose, who thrilled the WWE universe with a memorable battle against the Hardy Boyz.

The first live broadcast of WWE will take place early tomorrow morning with a broadcast of Raw from Memphis at 2am on SS4 / SS7 / Maximo 3 with a repeat broadcast at 7pm. Many of the WWE superstars will compete in the city made famous by Elvis Presley, among them Lesnar, Strowman, Cena, Roman Reigns and Sheamus.

To all objective and fair journalists out there, I salute you for the matchless services you offer to this world. For the fact that journalism is not a very rewarding profession, your keeping in there must never be taken for granted.

Having said that, allow me address the other side of the divide. The section that makes the journalism profession smelly and somewhat rotten. The section that is doing the exact opposite of the rightful journalism calling. The unethical, biased and disaster-prone section of the media.

Those that followed the 2016 USA presidential elections will agree with me that from the word go; the American and global media at large was an ‘unapologetic-ally’ biased in its reporting. In the race, the media had both a darling and an unwanted. Hillary Clinton was for all the right and wrong reasons the darling while Donald Trump was for everything the unwanted.

The latter knew it and publically attacked the media for what was gross unfair coverage of elections. The bias never stopped with the media as opinion polls were equally bent more on the side of Hillary Clinton. From both the opinion polls and media coverage, it was clearly that Hillary Clinton would win the American elections.

However, something unexpected happened. Within hours after casting and counting votes, it was clearly that the unwanted Donald Trump had taken the day. Hillary Clinton and her campaign reluctantly conceded defeat as Trump was declared president of USA.  While Trump triumphed, the media not Hillary Clinton was the villain. The Media was the biggest loser and until now, it’s yet to come to terms with what happened.

Whatever happened in USA in 2016, was supposed to be a clear lesson to the media across the world. But like many people out there, even most of the media players never learn.

In neighboring Kenya, a national election was held on 8th August 2017. Kenyans went to the poll to cast votes on 6 seats; member of county assembly, Member of Parliament, women representative, member of the senate, county governor and President.

Much focus was on the presidency. Just like what happened in the USA in 2016, majority of Kenyan media took sides. During the campaign period, most of the media houses in Kenya unashamedly campaigned for Raila Odinga and his NASA outfit while unfairly covered President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Jubilee campaign.

From coverage minutes, to political panelists interviewed, majority of the Kenyan media was leaning more to the opposition side, even though they all denied this observation. The media then came together and organized presidential debates, with an alleged purpose of giving all presidential candidates and their running matters a chance to sell their agenda during prime media time.

Even though the debates happened, they registered little success, as majority of the players shunned them. The biggest names to shun the debates were President Uhuru Kenyatta and his running mate, also deputy president, William Ruto. On their part, President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Jubilee outfit reasoned that the media had taken sides and thus Jubilee couldn’t take part in the debates. The decision by both Ruto and later Uhuru to shun the debates received several backlashes as many argued that, if the two couldn’t appear for a public debate then why would they be elected for presidency.

However, on their part, Uhuru and Ruto reasoned that instead of taking part in debates organized by the biased media, they would spend more time meeting and interacting with the 45 million Kenyans from their homes and places of work. This was later supported with live Social Media interviews in which the president would answer questions as asked by the people on Facebook and Twitter.

On 8th August, the Kenyan elections were held. The results as declared by the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) indicated that Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto had been re-elected by the Kenyans. In winning, Kenyatta garnered 8,203,290 votes (54.27 percent) against Odinga’s 6,762,224 votes (44.74 percent).

What happened in America in 2016 had now happened in Kenya. Uhuru Kenyatta won while both the Media and Raila Odinga lost.

Clearly, main stream media more than ever before needs to do some serious soul searching, if they are to remain relevant in the face of the surging influence of Social Media coupled with the former’s own misdeeds.

NOTE : As an update, Nasa has appealed UhuRuto’s victory in the Kenya Supreme Court. However, it is least likely that Nasa will have this election nullified as it doesn’t seem to have sufficient evidence if any for a strong case. Supreme Court will rule on this matter on 1st September 2017.

Mobile Money Users Save 19,329,887 Million Hours a Month – Time Saving Capacity of Mobile Money Study

A recent study by Digital Impact Awards Africa (DIAA) has revealed that at least 5,000,000 regular users of mobile financial services in Uganda during a 3 months period spent 7,113,356 man hours (296,390 man days) to clear simple financial transactions and saved 57,989,660 productive hours (An average of 19,329,887 million hours a month) that would otherwise be spent on using traditional transactions payment means.

While releasing this study results, Innocent Kawooya, CEO of HiPipo noted that
“the growth of mobile financial services, digital business and the Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to attract large investment in Africa by 2020” He added that “ Whereas leaders have always  got down to discuss high profile topics such as climate change, security and trade,  digital driven financial inclusion should take the podium now since it  is one of the things that will drive Africa’s prosperity by saving Africans a lot of productive time while performing many important but basic transactions.

Commenting about the Digital Impact Award Africa findings, the project patron Hon. Karubanga David (State Minister for Public Service and Member of Parliament for Kigorobya) noted that “With more people getting financially included using digital financial services, Uganda and the rest of Africa will see more productivity and this would be reflected in a steady growing Gross Domestic Product.”

Hon. Karubanga David donates ambulance to Kigorobya Health Centre

State Minister for Public Service and MP Kigorobya County, Hon. Karubanga David has donated an ambulance to Kigorobya Health Centre four in Hoima district.
“This is in fulfilment of my 2016 campaign pledge after realizing that mothers and children were dying due to lack of reliable transportation for patients to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital.” Hon. Karubanga noted.
The ambulance branded “Donated by Area MP” was handed over to the community under the witness of the local and district leaders at Kigorobya health center.

While handing it over the ambulance, Hon. Karubanga promised to take care of its driver’s salary, fuel and maintenance.
Hon. Karubanga urged Kigorobya people to work as team to ensure continuous development of our country.
John Steven Ekomu, the RDC Hoima applauded Hon. Karubanga for supplementing government programs aimed at offering quality health services.

Dr. Nicholas Kwikiriza said the ambulance will address the maternal and infant mortality. He however expressed concern over limited staffing at the facility.

James Mugenyi Mulindambura, the district secretary for health and education asked the community to keep good sanitation in order to reduce wide spread of hygiene related diseases.

MTN will sponsor KCCA FC sporting activities to the tune of 1.29 Billion Over 3 years. That translates to UGX 430m annually over the next three years.

MTN Uganda announced a three year landmark sponsorship deal towards KCCA Football Club activities.
Announcing this sponsorship, Chief Executive Officer Wim Vanhelleputte remarked, “Today we launch a partnership between two winning teams. MTN Uganda is therefore proud to sponsor KCCA FC sporting activities to the tune of over One Billion Two Hundred and Ninety Million Uganda Shillings (Ugx. 1.290B). This will support club activities for the next three years. With this landmark partnership, we are of the strong belief that this will go a long way in strengthening the club activities and by default, the players’ welfare.” KCCA FC will receive Ugx. 430 million per year as part of this MTN Sponsorship package.
MTN has over the years avidly supported various sports activities in Uganda ranging from the national football and the Basketball Leagues. Top Brands To Be Awarded In 13 Categories Showcasing Best In Class PR Work

The Public Relations Association of Uganda (PRAU) has today unveiled the 2017 PRAU Excellence Awards with a call for entry to individuals, organisations and agencies that wish to participate in the prestigious awards.

The PRAU Excellence Awards celebrate the greatest achievements and innovations across the public relations and communications industry in Uganda.

According to Ms. Cynthia Mpanga, the PRAU president, the awards will this year be organized under the theme “UPHOLDING PR EXCELLENCE IN TOUGH ECONOMIC TIMES” and shall honour companies and individuals with awards across thirteen categories.

“This year’s theme is reflective of the tough business environment that we operate in. We are aware that spend for communication work is shrinking by the day but there are brands out there that have been consistent in ensuring the produce excellence work no matter the environment they are in. These are the ones that we shall seek to award this year in the PRAU Awards” said Ms. Mpanga.

At the launch, the issue of the impact of digital PR over traditional PR arose again which highlighted the much needed impact of the current communication professional to stay abreast of the changes in the industry.

“The impact of digital on our profession continues. We are seeing more and more brands use the digital space to advance their communications. It will be interesting to see how far these brands have gone to ensure excellence in their work even as they use digital channels to get across to their clients and customers” she added.

Entries for the 2017 awards will be accepted from 1st August to 30th September 2017, with the winners announced at a glamorous gala on Friday October 27th 2017 at a venue yet to be named by the organizing committee.

Speaking at the launch Sheila E. Kangwagye, the associations Secretary General, highlighted the need to start early: “This year we have give a full two months to our members to submit their award entries. This will allow each and everyone who is participating enough time to prepare their award submissions as we understand this takes quite some time”.

The awards are open to; PR and communications practitioners, business enterprises/SMEs, government bodies, PR agencies, associations, NGO’s, students pursuing PR related courses, and In-house PR departments. Entries submitted to the PRAU Excellence Awards competition will be judged by an independent panel of senior and experienced practitioners.
